We highly recommend that anyone planning to purchase a puppy, buy from a reputable Breeder.
Pet Stores and amateur breeders are not the best source. And unfortunately, in every business there is at least one competitor that is a bottom-feeder. The dog breeding business is no exception!
You should do plenty of research on your prospective breeder. The unscrupulous dog breeder is commonly referred to as a "Puppy Mill" or "Puppy Broker". Their primary motivation is profit and they don't care about the buyer or the puppy after they cash the buyers check.
Puppy Brokers often sell entire litters to Pet Shops. They may represent to be the Breeder and defraud the store owner, or the Pet Shop owner simply does not want to ask the source of the puppies.
Amateur breeders, sometimes referred to as "Backyard Breeders", may not be breeding for money, but it doesn't mean they are doing it correctly. They may be breeding dogs because they think it's fun, cute or educational for their children, rather than understanding pedigrees. Temperament, attitude, structure and obtaining health clearances of the sire & dam before breeding are key considerations. At a minimum, eyes, hips, elbows and heart clearances must be obtained for Goldens.
Good breeders are actively showing dogs and motivated by improving their chosen breed and finding the best possible permanent and loving homes for the puppies they produce.
Please check-out your breeder carefully and make sure you are getting the proper value for your money and a healthy puppy!

If you were to Google "Puppy Mills" here is just a very small sample of what you will find. Since Kids may find this page, these photos are tame compared to the other photos of puppy mills on the internet. Get MAD about it!
